Don’t Forget the Props!

One of my favorite things to do at weddings (especially elopements or micro-weddings where there is less formal staging) is to bring “props” for the couple’s portrait session. Appropriate items can include anything that is meaningful about the couple, their hometown, hobbies, or the great city that is New York. Over the years I’ve included home state or country flags, items harkening back to college days, gadgets or toys related to hobbies or past-times (such Star Wars memorability on May 4!) and tried and true options like champagne for toasting or bride/;groom cupcakes for sharing sweets after the wedding.

These photos feature two recent couples who married in the last few months. My two gentlemen came from the United Kingdom for a sweet elopement at Wagner Cove in Central Park. I’d found the sign they hold, which featured their names and wedding date, at Paper Source. I gifted the sign to the grooms and replaced it with a sign I found on EBay.

The gorgeous ladies held a rainbow umbrella, as they were tying their wedding to the annual NYC Pride Parade and 50th anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion. I found a street vendor selling this awesome parasol on Fifth Avenue near the park. A park passerby liked it as much as I did, and it was taken after the wedding. I found a cheerful replacement, also on Ebay for about $25.
I think these shots are adorable, don’t you? So let your imagination run wild with photo props.
